Describe the image you need, and AutogenAI generates it and adds it to your document where your cursor is.
Before you start
- You need edit access to the document. With view access, you can't generate an image in it.
- Use the editor in your web browser. Image generation isn't available in the Word add-in.
Generate an image
- Put your cursor where you want the image.
- In the editor toolbar, select Image, then select Generate image.
- In the Describe the image to generate field, describe the image you need. Include the subject, style, colors and layout. For why the detail matters, see What the image is based on.
- Select Generate image, then wait a few seconds. The image is added to your document at your cursor.
- Check the image before you continue. If it isn't what you need, generate a new image with a fuller description. See How far to rely on a generated image.
What the image is based on
Each image is generated from what you write in the description. Brand colors, fonts and style need to be in the description each time, because style guides don't apply to generated images. You can't start from a logo, reference image or template.
Each request creates a new image. You can't edit or refine an image after it's generated.
How far to rely on a generated image
A generated image is AI-generated content. Like any draft content, it needs your review for accuracy before your document goes to review or submission.
The image is a single flat file, so you can't correct text or shapes inside it.
Options and limits
| Option or limit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Description length | Up to 12,000 characters |
| Images per request | 1 |
| File format | PNG or JPEG |
| Size and shape | Set automatically. You can't choose the size or aspect ratio before you generate. |
| Usage limits | Counts toward the same per-user limits as your other AI requests. |
Troubleshooting
Generate image isn't in the Image menu
Check that you're using the editor in your web browser.
If you are, image generation isn't switched on for your organization yet. To ask for a feature, see Getting features switched on in FAQs.
"Failed to generate image. Please try again"
No image came back for your request. Select Generate image again. If the same message appears, reword your description and try once more.
The image appears above the assistant's message box and can't be inserted
If you used the Generate image button in the assistant panel, the image appears above the message box. You can't insert it into your document from there, and it disappears when you send your next message.
To keep it, copy the image and paste it into your document before you send another message. Or generate the image from the editor toolbar instead.
